Why Walking Works

Walking for Weight Loss
Yep, you can actually lose weight just by walking. In fact, a typical inactive person who walks for just 30 minutes per day (at an easy pace of 3mph) will lose more than 10lbs over the course of one year.
Think about it - hit the pavement with some of your best friends for just 30 minutes each day and at the end of 1 year, you'll have lost 10 pounds - and have had a lot of good conversations.
Want to lose 20lbs in one year? Just double your time and walk for 60 minutes everyday.
Walking Vs Running
If you like to run, then definitely keep doing it. Running is great for cardio endurance and weight loss. However, if you do not like to run, or cannot run for one reason or another, give walking a try.
Walking is low impact, easy to do, inexpensive and can be done just about anywhere - treadmill or outside.
Walking Safety Tips
It may sound silly, but there are a few safety precautions to take when walking.
1. Walk against the flow of traffic, preferably on a sidewalk.
2. Try to walk while it's light outside. If not, wear reflective clothing so cars and traffic can easily see you.
3. Tell a friend or family your route and when you can be expected home.
4. Bring your ID and cell phone with you, even on short walks.
5. Bring water with you, even on short walks and in cooler weather.
6. When walking on a treadmill, be sure you know how to operate the machine, including how to use and where to find the emergency shut off switch.
